Breast Augmentation in Vietnam: Everything You Need to Know

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure that increases breast size, and enhances breast shape and fullness. The most common techniques include breast implants and fat grafting (fat transfer). In some patients, the procedure may also be combined with a breast lift (mastopexy) to improve breast position and achieve a more youthful appearance.

Common reasons for undergoing breast augmentation include:

  1. Small or underdeveloped breasts.

  2. Loss of breast volume following pregnancy or weight loss.

  3. Breast asymmetry, where one breast differs in size, volume, or position from the other.

Types Of Breast Implant Placement

Selecting the appropriate type of breast implant placement is crucial in achieving a natural-looking outcome. Each option comes with its own set of advantages and considerations.

Submuscular or subpectoral placement, where the implant is positioned beneath the chest muscle, is often favored by many patients. This placement offers enhanced coverage, resulting in a more natural look and feel. By being situated under the muscle, the implant is less likely to be visible or cause rippling. Additionally, submuscular placement contributes to a symmetrical appearance and can help prevent implant shifting.

On the other hand, subglandular placement, where the implant sits between the chest muscle and the breast tissue, appeals to individuals seeking a more pronounced breast contour. While this option may lead to a more visible implant, it offers a faster and less invasive procedure, facilitating a quicker recovery and return to normal activities. Nonetheless, some patients may encounter issues such as rippling and implant shifting with this placement.

Ultimately, both submuscular and subglandular implant placements can enhance the looks for your breasts. The optimal choice depends on individual goals, preferences, and considerations. Consulting with our qualified plastic surgeon and consultants is essential to determine the most suitable implant placement based on your unique needs.

Types Of Breast Implants

Breast implants are primarily categorized into two types: silicone and saline implants. Silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue, providing a more natural look and texture. On the other hand, saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution.

Both silicone and saline implants have their own trade-offs:

  1. Silicone Implants:

    • Offer a more natural look and feel compared to saline implants.

    • Less likely to ripple or wrinkle, providing a smoother appearance.

    • Require a longer incision for insertion due to pre-filled nature.

    • May require regular monitoring with MRI scans to detect any silent ruptures.

    • Typically more expensive than saline implants.

  2. Saline Implants:

    • Can be inserted through a smaller incision as they are filled after placement.

    • If ruptured, the saline solution is harmlessly absorbed by the body.

    • Tend to feel firmer and less natural compared to silicone implants.

    • More prone to visible rippling or wrinkling, especially in thin individuals.

    • Generally less expensive than silicone implants.

Types Of Incision Methods

Breast implants can be inserted through different types of incisions, including underarm (axillary), around the nipples (peri-areolar), or under the crease of the breast (inframammary). Among these, the inframammary incision, located along the fold of the breast, is a popular choice due to its shorter incision point and discreet scar placement. Patients may also consider laser resurfacing to minimize scar visibility.

The three main types of incisions for breast implant surgery are:

  1. Periareolar Incision: This involves making the incision around the nipple.

  2. Transaxillary Incision: The incision is made in the armpit area.

  3. Inframammary Incision: The incision is created in the fold beneath the breast.

Breast Augmentation With Fat Grafting

Fat grafting is an alternative method of breast augmentation commonly used in conjunction with breast implants. This procedure involves harvesting fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks through liposuction. The extracted fat is then processed into injectables and carefully injected into the breasts.

Fat transfer breast augmentation offers several advantages. The use of natural fat tissues results in breasts that feel more natural. Since the procedure utilizes the patient's own fat tissues, the risk of allergic reactions is reduced. Additionally, fat grafting is less invasive, leading to shorter downtime and minimal scarring. However, it typically does not allow for a significant increase in breast size compared to traditional breast implants. Therefore, fat grafting is often combined with breast implants to achieve the desired results.

How Long Do Breast Implants And Fat Transfer Last?

Contrary to common belief, breast implants have a limited lifespan and may require removal or replacement over time. While they do not technically "expire," they can experience issues such as rupture, shifting, or health complications after a certain duration. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, modern breast implants typically last between 10 to 20 years. Beyond the 10-year mark, the risk of implant rupture increases by approximately 1% each year. Regular monitoring and follow-ups are essential to ensure the ongoing safety and integrity of breast implants.

On the other hand, the results of a fat transfer breast augmentation can be considered permanent, but there are several factors to consider. One important consideration is that your breasts will not maintain the same size indefinitely. During the procedure, purified fat is transferred to the breasts to increase volume and improve shape. As part of the normal healing process, approximately 50–70% of the transferred fat typically survives long term, although this varies between individuals. Your breasts may appear larger immediately after surgery before gradually settling over the following weeks and months. Most of the final result is established by around 3 months, when the surviving fat has developed a permanent blood supply and the breasts have reached their long-term size and shape.

It's important to note that changes in breast size and shape can also be influenced by other factors. Since fat grafting utilizes your body's own fat cells, your enhanced breasts are subject to natural bodily processes such as aging and fluctuations in weight. Therefore, while fat transfer breast augmentation can provide long-lasting results, it's essential to maintain a stable weight to optimize and preserve the outcome over time.
